Project Details
The National Kiwi Hatchery at Rainbow Springs in Rotorua is New Zealand's most successful kiwi conservation facility. Operating since 1995, it is responsible for hatching and rearing more kiwi than any other programme in the country, contributing significantly to the survival of a species that has been in serious decline since European settlement.
The facility plays a dual role as both a working conservation centre and a public-facing visitor experience — offering people a rare and intimate encounter with one of New Zealand's most iconic and endangered taonga. Guests move through the hatchery's live operations, observing incubation, hatching, and chick-rearing up close, making it one of the few places in the world where conservation science and meaningful public engagement exist side by side.
