National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa
The National Kiwi Hatchery at Rainbow Springs is New Zealand's most successful kiwi conservation facility. Operating since 1995, it has hatched and reared more kiwi than any other programme in the country, a significant contribution to the survival of a species that has been in serious decline since European settlement.
The facility operates as both a working conservation centre and a public-facing visitor experience, giving people a rare, intimate encounter with one of New Zealand's most iconic and endangered taonga. Guests move through the hatchery's live operations, observing incubation, hatching, and chick-rearing up close, making it one of the few places in the world where conservation science and meaningful public engagement exist side by side.
