Te Rangihīroa Student Accommodation
Te Rangihīroa is a six-storey, 450-bedroom student accommodation facility for first-year residents, named in honour of Te Rangihīroa (Sir Peter Buck) — the first Māori to graduate with a medical degree from a New Zealand university.
The wayfinding strategy and bilingual signage are carefully integrated with the building's architecture. Internally, they complement the interior palette and incorporate a knot motif inspired by the He Manawa Ora glass frit pattern. The system features a custom typeface derived from Te Rangihīroa's own handwriting — also used across the building's identity and in the whakataukī etched into the stone façade.
For destinations and rooms, we established naming conventions connected to either Te Rangihīroa or Parihaka, each with a descriptor explaining its meaning. It's an approach that gives students an educational opportunity, helping to keep this important history alive.
