Auckland Airport Domestic Terminal Wayfinding

Auckland's Domestic Terminal had a navigation problem. A long, linear layout paired with nomenclature few passengers understood was making the journey harder than it needed to be.

We developed a comprehensive wayfinding strategy built around the moments that matter most: terminal access points and clear identification through a standardised coding system, bringing the terminal into line with industry-standard toponymy.

To prove it worked before a single sign went up, we ran extensive Customer-Centered Design testing. Using a 3D model of the terminal, we simulated every signage element and guided participants through typical journeys — forecourt to departure gate — with milestones along the way.

Comprehension was high, and the journey measurably smoother. The new system is now live in the terminal, guiding passengers from arrival to gate.
